Fear of Streisand

In the aftermath of the Digg revolt we suffered through endless alarmist screeds about the “dangers” of community mobs. This is now giving way to the media’s newest fear: the Streisand Effect, the Web-based antibody to corporate damage control efforts. As Forbes reports: “When the Streisand effect takes hold, contraband doesn’t disappear quietly. Instead, it infects the online community in a pandemic of free-speech-fueled defiance, gaining far more attention than it would have had the information’s original owners simply kept quiet.”

Free speech is conveyed here as a disease that infects communities, just like the epidemic from 28 Days Later. This is how too many old guard companies view their customers–as mindless, sludge-sucking zombies.
